AIRPORT ON WATER: KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

ABSTRACT
Transportation is an important factor for the social and economic development of any region or country. The economic development of the nation links its direct benefits with the efficient system of transportation. A Civil Engineering Monument of the Millennium: KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (AIRPORT ON WATER) is one such form of transportation in an artificial island in Osaka, Japan.
Kansai International Airport (KIX) was build and based in Osaka Bay about 3 miles off the Japanese shore. KIX feature an extensive variety of user-friendly, clean and with modern amenity. It is the first airport in the world that is able to function all the 24 hours. The Kansai region was becoming a major industrial area but had little means necessary to move its goods and capitalize on its potential for expansion. The idea of building an international airport was violently revolted by radical landowners and angry farmers, and the project was forced to shut down. Soon the Kansai region, which included the large cities of Kobe and Osaka, became a sprawling metropolis. City designers were forced to find a solution as to where to put an airport. With the majority of land yielding to the inhabitants of Kansai, the only practical solution was to build on water.

The main advantages are its own recycling centre, airport security or of temporary monitoring unit. In 2013, KIX is working to utilize clean energy source including solar energy and hydrogen to realize an environmentally advanced airport. American society of civil engineers (ASCE) selected Kansai International Airport as one of the 10 Civil Engineering achievements with the greatest positive Impact.
